National language: Spanish, although English is widely spoken at resorts and in major tourist destinations.

Currency: The local currency is Cuban peso (CUP). Visa and Mastercard credit cards by non-American banks are accepted. Canadians can also use DEBIT/VISA from Canadian banks.

Hotels and resort areas accept payments in cash (CAD, USD, EUROS) or by Debit/visa or Visa, Mastercard credit cards from Canadian banks. Clients who don’t have a credit card can buy a pre-paid card in Cuba at the airport, exchange houses and resort areas.

Payments outside the tourist areas are in local Cuban pesos (CUP); though if you visit a private business there is more flexibility as it’s at the owner discretion which currency to accept (usually they take different currencies); we recommend exchanging Canadian dollars into pesos as you need them and only if you are planning to travel around outside of the tourist zones; since you won’t be able to exchange the left-over pesos back into Canadian at the end of the holidays. The best currency for tips is USD.

Voltage: 110V. Most Canadian devices use 120V which are compatible with 110V, but we recommend bringing an adaptor with voltage conversion for items using motors, heating or three-prong plugs.

What to buy: Cuba produces some of the world’s best rum, coffee and cigars! Havana Club rum, Cohiba cigars and Cubita Coffee are all popular choices (just make sure to claim any alcohol or cigars when you return to Canada).

Legal wedding requirements

• Wedding couple must arrive in destination at least three business days prior to the ceremony date.
• Copies of valid passports for the wedding couple.
• Original copy of your Cuban Tourist Card (issued during the flight).
• If either party has been divorced, a copy of the divorce certificate that has been legalized and translated by the Cuban Consulate in the country of origin, in addition to the original marriage certificate.
• If either party has been widowed, a copy of the death certificate that has been legalized and translated by the Cuban Consulate in the country of origin, in addition to the original marriage certificate.
• Wedding couple must send scanned copies of all these documents at least 60 days prior to the wedding date.
